General Questions

What is the Austrian vignette?
The Austrian vignette is a toll sticker that grants access to Austrian motorways and expressways. It is issued by ASFINAG and is mandatory for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permissible weight.
Which vehicles require a vignette?
The vignette requirement applies to all motor vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, including cars, motorcycles, motorhomes up to 3.5t and light vans. Vehicles over 3.5t are subject to distance-based tolling (GO-Box).
Does the vignette cover trailers?
No. Trailers do not need their own vignette. The vignette of the towing vehicle also covers the trailer being towed.
How long is the annual vignette valid?
The annual vignette is valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year – a total of 14 months. It can be purchased from early November of the previous year.

Purchase

Where can I buy the vignette?
The vignette is available online via the ASFINAG website, at petrol stations, tobacconists, post offices and motoring clubs (ÖAMTC, ARBÖ). Many petrol stations in neighbouring countries also stock Austrian vignettes.
Can I buy the vignette online?
Yes. The e-vignette can be purchased directly on the ASFINAG website. It is registered to your number plate and is valid immediately after purchase.
What payment methods are accepted?
Online purchases accept credit cards, debit cards and various online payment methods. Cash payment is also possible at petrol stations and tobacconists.
Can I return a vignette?
Adhesive vignettes cannot be returned once affixed. E-vignettes may be cancelled under certain circumstances if they have not yet been used. Contact ASFINAG directly for this.

Display

Where must the vignette be displayed?
The adhesive vignette must be affixed to the inside of the windscreen so that it is clearly visible from outside. The top left corner or the area behind the rear-view mirror is recommended.
What happens if the vignette is incorrectly displayed?
An incorrectly displayed vignette may be treated as invalid during inspections. Ensure the vignette is fully visible and not affixed on top of another film.

Fines

How much is the fine for driving without a vignette?
If caught without a valid vignette, a substitute toll of at least €120 is payable. In the worst case, a report may be filed, leading to an administrative fine of up to €3,000.
How are inspections carried out?
Inspections are carried out both at fixed checkpoints and by mobile patrol units. E-vignettes are checked electronically via the number plate.

Exemptions

Who is exempt from the vignette requirement?
Exempt vehicles include emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance), vehicles with a disability badge under certain conditions, and local residents with the appropriate permit.
Does the vignette apply on federal roads?
No. The vignette requirement only applies on motorways and expressways. Federal roads (B-roads) are toll-free.
